Artemidorus, writing in the 2nd century, treats the sun as a good omen for nearly everyone, with one exception: anyone trying to stay hidden, since the sun puts everything in plain view. I'll use that idea as a thread. A dream sun warms you, but it lights things up first, and what it lights up matters as much as how warm it feels. Here's how to read yours by its timing, its strength, and its temperature.
What does it mean to dream of the sun?
Most often, a dream sun is about clarity and energy: an idea coming into focus, a drive returning, a stretch of life clearing up.
Because it lights up everything, it can also point to what has just come into the open in your life: a decision, a conversation, a result you can't ignore anymore. Psychological readings tend to see your radiance, your confidence, the space you take up. I treat those as leads. The same dazzling sun can mean self-assurance for one person and, for another, the exhaustion of always being on show. To tell which, look at how you feel in the dream. Are you comfortable in that light, or looking for shade?
The Islamic tradition offers another way in. In the books that carry Ibn Sirin's name, the sun stands for an important person: a ruler, a father, a master, a husband. Try the question the other way around. Who in your life plays that role, the one whose mood sets the weather at home or at work? A sun that comes close to you, speaks to you, or enters your house is read there as the support of influential people. Even if you don't take those readings literally, the question of who your sun is deserves a minute when you wake up.
What does a rising sun, or a sun high in the sky, mean?
It's the most favorable scene: a clear sun, climbing or standing high, goes with a drive you can follow.
Artemidorus calls a bright, pure sun good for nearly everyone: it wakes you from sleep, pushes you to act, helps you make money, and sometimes announces children. In Ibn Sirin, seeing the sun is a sign of better means. At noon, light falls straight down and leaves almost no shadow. Picture yourself walking through your dream with nothing in your way: it's a scene of full availability, often tied to a time when you feel capable, or to a decision you're ready to make. If you feel strong, take it as a green light and make hay while the sun shines. If the light leaves you uneasy, maybe it gives you nowhere to catch your breath. Ask what, these days, expects you to be at your best around the clock.
The rising sun has a Chinese version, more intimate: the sun that enters a mother's body before the birth of a child destined for greatness. I tell that story below, in the traditions.

What does a burning or blinding sun mean?
A sun that's too strong almost always points to pressure: something, or someone, is asking too much of you.
Artemidorus counts the dark, blood-colored sun, or one that roars with heat, among the bad omens: obstacles, illness, danger to those close to you. In Ibn Sirin, being burned by the sun means a trial imposed by someone in authority. Those old readings point the same way yours probably does.
To find out what it is, look for the source of the heat in your waking life: a workload with no breaks, a boss who leaves no slack, a loved one whose attention weighs on you, or your own standards. If you ran toward shade, note what you were trying to protect. When the setting is barren, dreaming of a desert goes further into the scene, and if your skin kept the mark, dreaming of a burn looks closely at that detail. If the exhaustion is real and lasts, a doctor can do more for you than a dream can.
What does a sunset mean in a dream?
A sun going down slowly speaks of an ending: of a day, a season of life, a role you've been playing.
The fading light announces a passage, and what you feel matters more than the image. Nostalgia says you're looking back. Calm says you're ready to set something down. Worry says it's what comes next that scares you, the night after the ending. In the first two cases, the dream gives you time: a dusk is something you watch, and it rushes no one. What in your life is reaching closing time? a job winding down, a relationship changing shape, a habit you're ready to leave. The golden light of this scene is often gentler than what it announces.
Artemidorus is harsher with a sun that vanishes altogether: bad for nearly everyone, except people who wanted to hide. I read it as a reminder that when the light goes out, shadow takes its place. What does a cold, black, or midnight sun mean?
A sun that's out of place shows light without what normally comes with it: the warmth, or the day.
A sun at midnight reads as clarity at the wrong hour, an idea or a truth that insists on being heard when you'd rather sleep. A sun that gives no warmth, white, flat, like a cardboard cutout, points to a gap between what you show and what you feel: you put on a good face, and the warmth isn't there. I also read it as a cold pause, useful for deciding without getting carried away. Only you can say which fits: in front of that sun, were you calm or chilled? For the other light of the night, there's dreaming of the moon.
The black sun is the darkest case. Ibn Sirin reads it as an enemy who deceives, and a popular Chinese dream guide reads it as melancholy. If that sun keeps coming back and your days are darkening too, tell someone you trust, and bring in a health professional if it lingers.
What does it mean when the sun hides or keeps you waiting?
A sun hidden by clouds or stalled at the edge of the horizon speaks of what is slow to arrive: a joy, an answer, some energy.
The Japanese myth of Amaterasu tells this scene. The sun goddess, furious, shuts herself in the heavenly rock cave and the world goes dark (Kojiki, 712). The gods prefer music: they dance and laugh until she opens the door a crack, curious. I find it touching, because it shows that joy can't be ordered. If your sun is hiding, ask yourself what you're forcing yourself to do right now, and what would make you smile without effort. When a black disc slides across it, the eclipse has a page of its own: dreaming of an eclipse.
What does it mean when things turn toward the sun?
When the dream shows flowers, an animal, or people turned toward the light, the question shifts from the sun's power to your own direction.
In real life, young sunflowers follow the sun through the day, and mature flowers settle facing east. If a field of sunflowers shows up in your dream, ask yourself what you're turning toward right now. What feeds you, and what do you keep looking at even though it no longer warms you?
